This is the story about a fantastic ship built in 1897 that sunk in 1911 in Lake Superior in Canada. I was fortunate to get in contact with diver and archeologist Scott McWilliam. Scott took time to introduce me to this fantastic wreck lying at 80 meters. He dived it in his early diving career on
air (!) and finished his adventure with a survey in 1993. In the 30's a search was carried out and hard-hat divers tried to find the wreck.. The story will take you all the way from the beginning to the End, an amazing story! I would like to give my warmest regards to Scott who wrote me this story and I also want to thank Fred Bronelle for his amazing adventures and hope he will be able to read this story!

Cryogene Rebreather Technology from 1965

In 1965 Halbert Fischel together with Tony DiChiro and Larry Cushman and Dave Joss designed and tested a cryogenic diving system capable of taking the diver to 307 meters of depth with diving times up to 5 hours. The units used a technology using cryogenic scrubbers. The energy for reaching these low temperatures was achieved by the use of liquid nitrogen. The technique is not commonly in use anymore. The russians build a similar design that can be seen here.
Sentinel: design and concept description by Kevin Gurr

The OR will always be our deep diving rebreather. It has very low breathing resistance (resistive), great electronics and manual backup systems and a virtually fail-safe gas plumbing system (Swagelok 316 stainless). All of these things add cost (especially the Swagelok!).

95% of divers will never take this rebreather anywhere near its' performance limits.

My view is that recreational diving now regularly takes a lot of people to 100m. This has led to the new design. Ten years ago 100m diving was heavy-duty expedition territory, now it is not. 100m as a bailout (with reasonable bottom times) is also not too difficult logistically.

So the challenge is to make a rebreather more cost effectively but still with an acceptable (and high) degree of performance.

Draeger Tauchretter TR60 review

Recently I was able to buy a Dräger Tauchretter Model TR 60. This life saving dive jacket was designed in the 60's and is a surprising rebreather. One of the most interesting aspects of this rebreather is that in fact it is a semiclosed rebreather! It is well known that using pure oxygen rebreathers to escape from depth introduces a big risk of oxygen toxicity. Semiclosed rebreathers offer a improvement because the breathed gas has a much lower oxygen content. This rebreather uses EAN 50!

Recently I was able to buy a nice Fenzy oxygen rebreather in Switzerland. The unit was build in 1977 and is a very good condition. Customs in both Swiss and Holland had large interesse in this unit but finally they approved my import and charged me additional import tax. After several rebreather teardowns you are always looking for new ideas and features. This french unit has some very interesting features. Please enjoy the teardown. I am working to obtain the original manual to complete this information!

Help to find stolen rebreathers back!

Dear Jan Willem

I wonder whether you might be kind enough to help spread the word about a number of very special rebreathers of mine that have been stolen. I stupidly allowed myself to be conned by a buyer in the UK who expressed great interest in three very meticulously restored military rebreathers.

I was advised to have the transaction handled by an Escrow company called (name on request), but alas I did not check them out thoroughly enough and of course the units were sent but no money was ever put in my account. They were delivered to (information on request) and of course disappeared after that.

I fully restored two LAR V sets to a condition that could only be described as exhibition quality, way beyond the finish normally offered by Dräger, I also created a LAR VI in the same way and it is these 3 units that would now be up for sale either in the UK or Europe.

One LAR V is the classic version with rubber straps serial # 2001 / 86 The second LARV has webbing clips to connect to a combat harness, serial #2002 / 86 The LAR VI has webbing clips and also included a combat harness, serial number ARAA / 0202

I enclose some images showing the three units plus the name plates that I made for each one with a unique serial number and the shipping crates that they were sent in.

Kind Regards, Mike

Ice diving in Holland 2009

This page is dedicated to the best thing there is. Ice-diving in Holland. Unfortunately the last 12 years the winters where not cold enough to make us a good old 6" of ice. Now after all these years today we had the opportunity to make a very nice dive in a cold and icy Holland. This was a very nice day with friends in a good atmosphere. Nice dive, nice weather and most important we made a safe dive. For that reason we used a lot of rebreathers because they are comfortable, offer warm air and are very reliable. The diving spot was organised in the official way using traffic signs and the Police checked the spot so all was OK. Enjoy the pictures! 12-01-2009

High Altitude Breathing in the early days

For high altitude flying, from 4000 meters and higher, it was necessary for the crew to find breathing equipment to be able to breath oxygen for respiration. Therefore the German company Ahrendt and Heplandt developed a breathing apparatus that was produced in two versions, a small type en a larger type.

APD launches OCB valve

We are delighted to announce that the Open Circuit Bailout Mouthpiece, the OCB, is now available.

This highly sought after product will enable the diver to bail out to open circuit with one movement without removing the mouthpiece from their mouth, very easy in a stressful situation and will provide peace of mind for many divers. The custom designed mouthpiece is extremely compact and lightweight, weighing in at only 350g in air but is neutrally buoyant in the water. It features new lever operated switching between open circuit and closed circuit making it very easy to use and of course it has undergone the extensive third party testing required for CE approval. It is rated to EN14143, the rebreather standard, EN13949, the nitrox standard and EN250, the regulator standard and in fact exceeds the requirements for this standard. The OCB can also be used in fast flowing water for instance when scootering.

Ambient Pressure Diving’s patented dual valve technology allows gas to be fed from the left or right facilitating individual configuration and is ready for use with high oxygen percentage gasses. Manufactured to a very high standard in our specialist facility it can be fitted to existing units and will be optional on the purchase of a new unit. As with all our products full spares and back up are available.

The OCB will be available as standard with the convoluted hoses allowing the diver to easily interchange the mouthpiece that is connected to their Inspiration or Evolution by simply disconnecting at the T-pieces. However it will also be available without the convoluted hoses if required. It will be supplied as standard with a 1.5 metre low pressure hose using our reusable LP fittings which allow you to shorten the hose as required.

Thanks to a lot of people and especially David L Dekker I have been able to update the information about these early helmet rebreathers. The Gurteltauchgerat is a single oxygenbottle on the back with scrubber system. The DM 20 has a dual oxygen cylinder worn on the back with scrubber, and finally the DM40 was one of the first nitrox semiclosed injector based rebreathers on the market.

Here you find some information about the diving trip we made to Dover UK. We intended to go to Helgoland but the weather forced us to go to the South. Since we passed Belgium we tried some beers in Oostende first, and then finally arrived in Dover. Heavy winds and awful Dutch football prevented us from diving so we took a look in Dover Castle. Dover Castle was the basis for operation Dynamo, a great story! On this page you find some history and info about the wrecks we dived and pictures from the trip.
Please enjoy!

Michael Hearn shows his new Cameleon adaptive system.

I'll give a brief out line of our new prototype, hopefully it will be of interest .we didn't want to design a whole new rebreather , every one has there own way of setting up their RB, we wanted to build the heart of the system ,the scrubber and electronics allowing divers to set up the rest as they want. I teamed up with a good friend of mine Pascal and we put our heads together and came up with the Camelion. an integrated aluminium scrubber and electronics pod with integrated stand and lifting handle. primarily aimed at classic Inspiration owners who can use all the other parts like lungs wings harness etc but allowing them to place there own electronics ,ie shearwater, hammerhead etc setting the system up to suit them. the electronic pod holds up to 5 cells ,solenoids, 2 or more can be placed here taking into account future upgrades of controllers. there are 2 oxygen feeds allowing the user to set up with full electronic control or a CMF system or both side by side ,which seems to becoming more popular. there are 3 ports to connect computer ,hud, and a backup display. The scrubber is still undergoing design changes ,in the prototype it is a radial holding over 2.6 kg of scrubber material but still undergoing testing to see which design is more efficient. On the prototype the back plate tank holders and parts of the base are made from titanium. We will be showing this in London, but want to point out that this is a prototype and is not on the market. We would like to see if there is a place for something new and we think different.

Classic Inspiration in top condition

For sale: Inspiration Classic from June 2005.

The unit is in near new condition and located in the Netherlands.

The lungs are large, the harness is medium size. It has the large APD wing. The handsets have backlights and have been serviced about a year ago; the unit has hardly been used since. The handsets are in good condition. The O2 cells are from 2006 and need to be replaced, obviously. I am uncertain as to the exact number of hours that the unit has been used. I would guess that it is more than 30 and less than 40. The number of hours in salt water is less than 10.

New pictures and information about Eugenio Wolk and Italian Gamma

a small part of the article :

According to Wolk's own records - as given by his widow to Marino Viganó - the Belloni suit was an one-piece, loose-fitting rubber garment with a "funnel" in the front torso. It was hence very similar to the Sladen, though the accordion-and-clip system to close and seal it sounds more alike to the Desco (which was back-funneled). The two-piece, close-fitting dry 'gamma' suit also issued to K-men should have been Eugenio Wolk's brainchild, and the inmediate forerunner to its 1946, 1948 and 1951 patents. Both one and another type were worn over woolen underwear, and often protected against tearing and scratching by a common mechanic's jumpsuit.

Mentes CCR Rebreather from the Czech Republic

The Mentes Rebreather from the czech republic uses electronics from Jurgenson Marine. The mechanical construction of the head of the rebreather is based on a sensor chamber fitted with a water trap. The construction of the head is made in such a manner that both breathing hoses - for in and out breathing – lead to a nozzle that is located on the side of the head of rebreather. This is done thanks to small channel inside the head. In rebreather a radial scrubber of own construction is used. It is made from Delrin and stainless steel. The radial scrubber has pressure plate on springs and the plate presses the absorbent so it helps for a better filling of the scrubber with the absorbent. Electronics are located in a case made from Delrin, and the cover plate is from Dural. The control and handling is done via piezo-switches. More on construction can be seen here on detailed pictures of the unit.

New French book about MCCR rebreathers

Les Recycleurs
Principes, gestion, stratégies de décompression
by Jacques Vettier

The first and only book which speaks in french about mCCR !
Available in library and scuba shop / disponible en librairie et magasin de plongée

Many divers think that rebreathers are the future of diving. And actually, since a couple of years, these bizarre machines have been gaining boat decks, lake shores and spring basins. They have been initriguing the newbie as much as they scare him. It's because so much is said about them ... They would be so performant but so difficult to master.
Done in the same spirit as the previous book, Nitrox Trimix, this book aims to demystify closed circuit rebreathers. Through the more user friendly models, the mCCR, the famous Kiss-like, it exposes some points that are specific to them and extends to more general questions, that a candidate to a closed circuit rebreather can have : use of sorb, decompression with constant ppO2, configuration, computers, bailout.
It is not a "diving manual", as experience is acquired in the water, but a door opened to a future ... already present !

New Russian Selfmixing rebreather

Alexey Stekolshikow has informed me about a very special rebreather, the Russian IDA72V.

IDA-72V is written IDA-72B in Russian. The IDA-72V is shown here. "V" stands for Vodyanoj meaning "water heated". So the IDA72V is umbilical guided and dived unit supplied with hot water and probably gas. The bottles inside will offer redundancy.

IDA-72E is the Elektricheskij version, meaning "electrically heated". The unit works in the same principle but received low voltage electric power form the surface. The IDA72E was later modified for the use of Heliox and called IDA 73

The original description of the unit can be found here

Alexey made his own recreational rebreather with the use of parts from different rebreathers. He used the IDA-72V as the donor unit and added parts of IDA-59 and KIP-8 rebreather. He then made his own oxygauge from single parts and finally finished the unit by making it work as an selfmixing semiclosed rebreather. Please follow the steps and information he provided. The unit has some unique aspects and is very nice to read. The unit has to be tested for now but all looks nice and well!

Alexey, I am really proud you allowed me to share this information with all the readers from my web. If someone wants to get in contact with Alexey please don't hesitate to send an email!

Last weeks less new publications were published. This has a good reason. I have updated ALL links in my website. Too many links did not work since I installed new servers. Now the website is running faster then ever. In the near future the start page will be redesigned in such way it loads much faster. I hope you will enjoy the content and I would be pleased to receive tips if any link should not work. Also I had to unlink some pages since the original website disappeared. If you know the new URL please let me know!

Best regards;

Diving with a superoxide unit in the Finnish waters.

The IDA 59 former Russian escape rebreather is a big technical challence to dive with. This unit originally uses superoxide. This chemical that absorbs CO2 while producing oxygen is highly explosive and can cause severe burns when it contacts water..... Matti Anttila used this unit to modify it in such way that it can be dived safely. Read his story in this webpage that links to his nice illustrated page about these modifications!
